Origin of Astro*Carto*Graphy

Jim Lewis created the trademark "Astro*Carto*Graphy" in the early 1970's.  He had created a new way of drawing a person's astrological birth chart to make it easier to see how changing your location could change the operation of your birth chart in your  life, and he created a business to sell them.  In those days it had the excitement of something quite new and revolutionary: no one had ever seen maps like these before.

But in fact, like most inventions, there was very little that was completely new about Astro*Carto*Graphy -- it was the new combination of very old practices that was its genius.  Jim Lewis was thoroughly grounded in the contemporary practice of astrology and in no way challenged or changed how astrologers had been interpreting the stars for centuries.  So to understand Astro*Carto*Graphy we need to understand the most basic principles of astrology itself.
